When a person's weight is spread across hundreds or even thousands of nails, the pressure on any individual nail is greatly reduced. This is very different from standing on one single nail, where the entire force of the body is concentrated on a tiny area.
The arrangement allows the body to rest on many points at the same time, making the experience possible for trained performers and practitioners.

My Cartoon Take on the Bed of Nails
As a cartoonist, I have always enjoyed taking familiar situations and adding an unexpected twist. The bed of nails seemed like the perfect subject for a surreal cartoon because it already contains drama, mystery and a touch of the unbelievable.
In my cartoon, the scene is set in an Indian market. A vendor is proudly showing a bed of nails to an Indian fakir customer, but the sales pitch takes a very modern turn:
"Plus you get additional points on your loyalty card."
The humour comes from mixing an ancient image of endurance with a modern shopping promotion. Even a legendary bed of nails experience apparently needs a customer rewards scheme!
