Thick skinned...

This cartoon takes a playful look at two familiar expressions – “beauty is only skin deep” and “thick-skinned.” 

It shows a man lounging comfortably in his armchair while a woman stands nearby, listening as he declares, “Well, if I’m thick skinned, and beauty’s skin deep – that makes me pretty damn attractive.”

The humour lies in his confident – though rather flawed – logic. By combining the literal meanings of the two sayings, he manages to turn what might be a less-than-flattering trait into a compliment to himself. 

It’s a fun example of how twisting idioms can lead to unexpected and amusing results.

It’s a light, conversational cartoon that captures everyday wit and wordplay – the kind of cheeky remark you could almost imagine being said in real life.

Drink to Forget...

This cartoon takes a humorous look at the familiar idea of “drinking to forget”. 

It shows a barman addressing a customer with a wry expression, saying, “Next time you drink to forget, could you at least remember to pay your bar bill!”

The joke plays on the well-known phrase, twisting it cleverly to highlight the realities of running a bar – that however forgetful a customer might want to be, the bill still needs paying. 

It’s a gentle and witty reminder of how human nature and humour often meet in everyday life.

Like many of my cartoons, it’s set in a familiar social scene and uses wordplay and timing to create an instantly recognisable situation. A simple one-liner, but one that always raises a smile.

Driving lessons...

This cartoon captures a light-hearted moment from a driving lesson that has clearly gone a bit off track. 

It features a driving instructor patiently explaining to his pupil, Mrs Smith, the seemingly simple process of opening the car door – saying, “So, once again, Mrs Smith, it’s grab handle, grip firmly, and pull straight towards you…”.

The humour comes from the exaggerated idea that Mrs Smith has struggled even with this most basic part of the lesson, setting the tone for what must be a long day for the instructor.

It’s a gentle, observational kind of comedy that many driving instructors – and nervous learners – can probably relate to.

This cartoon fits neatly into that long tradition of motoring humour, poking fun at everyday situations on the road and behind the wheel, while keeping the tone warm and good-natured.

If this cartoon made you smile, take a look at “Football – Assistant Referee Cartoon” or the tongue-in-cheek “Promising the Earth”. Both have that same wry sense of humour!

Lottery win cartoon...

This cartoon plays on the classic theme of sudden fortune and how it can change people’s lives – sometimes quite dramatically. 

It shows a man sitting comfortably in his armchair, reading a newspaper, while behind him his wife is quietly leaving through the front door, carrying two suitcases.

Unaware of what’s happening, the man asks, “Do you think your big lottery win’s going to change your life at all, dear?” 

The humour lies in his complete obliviousness to the fact that her life is already changing – and in a very immediate way.

It’s a simple scene, but one that captures a lot of character and irony in a single frame. 

The cartoon gently pokes fun at communication (or the lack of it) in relationships, and at how winning the lottery can reveal different priorities altogether!

Marriage Proposal...

This cartoon takes a humorous look at relationships and expectations within marriage. 

It depicts a man named Kevin kneeling before a woman, clearly in the act of proposing.

However, her unimpressed expression sets the tone for the punchline as she replies, “It’s WIFE, Kevin – not housekeeper.”

The joke works on the idea that some men may have outdated or unrealistic views about married life, expecting their partner to take on domestic duties without question. 

The humour lies in the woman’s sharp and witty correction, which turns the situation on its head and adds a touch of realism to the romantic scene.

It’s a light-hearted reminder that mutual respect and partnership are far more important than traditional roles – all delivered with a gentle dose of everyday comedy.

Police Training School...

This black-and-white cartoon of mine has proved to be one of my most popular and best-selling pieces. 

It shows a police instructor standing before a classroom of cadets, pointing to a blackboard on which the words “Hello, Hello, Hello, What’s all this then?” are neatly written – the classic line so often associated with traditional British policing.

The humour lies in the idea of this familiar phrase being treated as part of formal police training – as if recruits must practise the iconic greeting before heading out on duty. 

It’s a simple concept, but one that seems to strike a chord with people, especially those with links to the police service or a fondness for classic British humour.
