A Summary of 2016 Posts on this Blog

During 2016, the blog has continued to grow into a lively mix of humour, cartoons and design ideas. 

It has been a colourful year filled with quirky T-shirts, mugs and printed gifts, alongside playful commentaries on everyday life.

Husband being Awkward!

This cartoon takes place in a marriage guidance office, where the conversation between husband and wife has clearly reached a familiar impasse. 

The humour comes from the surreal visual twist - the husband is calmly sitting on a chair fixed to the ceiling, while the wife sits on the floor in a perfectly normal way. 

Her line, “See what I mean about being awkward?”, ties the whole thing together. What might normally be a complaint about a stubborn or difficult partner is taken to a literal extreme - he’s not just awkward in personality, he’s awkward in position too. 

The gag works because it combines everyday relationship friction with absurd visual logic, making it both recognisable and delightfully ridiculous at the same time.

This cartoon takes a wry look at married life, capturing that all-too-familiar mix of love, frustration, and humour that often comes with long-term relationships. 

It shows an overweight, dozing husband slumped in a chair while his wife and her friend stand nearby, sharing a private moment of exasperation. 

The wife remarks, “I wish he WAS my dream-man, then I wouldn’t have to live with him.”

The joke lands perfectly on the contrast between fantasy and reality – that gap between the ideal partner we imagine and the one we actually share a home with. 

It’s a gentle, good-natured poke at the everyday imperfections that make relationships both challenging and amusing.

Like many of my cartoons, it finds the humour in ordinary domestic life, turning a moment of frustration into something relatable and laugh-out-loud funny.

Thick skinned...

This cartoon takes a playful look at two familiar expressions – “beauty is only skin deep” and “thick-skinned.” 

It shows a man lounging comfortably in his armchair while a woman stands nearby, listening as he declares, “Well, if I’m thick skinned, and beauty’s skin deep – that makes me pretty damn attractive.”

The humour lies in his confident – though rather flawed – logic. By combining the literal meanings of the two sayings, he manages to turn what might be a less-than-flattering trait into a compliment to himself. 

It’s a fun example of how twisting idioms can lead to unexpected and amusing results.

It’s a light, conversational cartoon that captures everyday wit and wordplay – the kind of cheeky remark you could almost imagine being said in real life.

Drink to Forget...

This cartoon takes a humorous look at the familiar idea of “drinking to forget”. 

It shows a barman addressing a customer with a wry expression, saying, “Next time you drink to forget, could you at least remember to pay your bar bill!”

The joke plays on the well-known phrase, twisting it cleverly to highlight the realities of running a bar – that however forgetful a customer might want to be, the bill still needs paying. 

It’s a gentle and witty reminder of how human nature and humour often meet in everyday life.

Like many of my cartoons, it’s set in a familiar social scene and uses wordplay and timing to create an instantly recognisable situation. A simple one-liner, but one that always raises a smile.

Driving lessons...

This cartoon captures a light-hearted moment from a driving lesson that has clearly gone a bit off track. 

It features a driving instructor patiently explaining to his pupil, Mrs Smith, the seemingly simple process of opening the car door – saying, “So, once again, Mrs Smith, it’s grab handle, grip firmly, and pull straight towards you…”.

The humour comes from the exaggerated idea that Mrs Smith has struggled even with this most basic part of the lesson, setting the tone for what must be a long day for the instructor.

It’s a gentle, observational kind of comedy that many driving instructors – and nervous learners – can probably relate to.

This cartoon fits neatly into that long tradition of motoring humour, poking fun at everyday situations on the road and behind the wheel, while keeping the tone warm and good-natured.

This black-and-white cartoon of mine has proved to be one of my most popular and best-selling pieces.
