Scaffolding is one of those everyday sights that many people walk past without giving it much thought. Yet for those working in construction and building maintenance, it is absolutely essential.
Scaffolding provides the safe platforms and access that allow tradespeople to carry out repairs, installations, cleaning and new builds at height.
It has been around in one form or another since ancient times, with early versions made from lashed timber poles, but today’s systems use sturdy steel tubing and secure couplers that can be adjusted and reused on countless projects.

Modern scaffolders are highly skilled professionals. They must understand structural safety, load bearing, weather conditions and health regulations.
From erecting a simple tower for domestic gutter repairs, to setting up vast structures on skyscrapers, bridges or stadiums, scaffolders are at the heart of keeping the construction industry moving.
Their work is often physically demanding and sometimes overlooked, yet it underpins nearly every building and maintenance project you see around you.
A Cartoonist’s Take on Scaffolding
As a cartoonist, I wanted to capture this world in a simple yet recognisable way. I created a line drawing of a scaffolder in a hard hat, tightening a coupler clamp as he erects scaffolding.
It is a lighthearted sketch but one that resonates with anyone who works in the trade. Scaffolders often appreciate humour and visual designs that connect directly with their profession, so I thought this image would be perfect for a range of customised products.
